James B. Moore, Esq. — John Sloan

James B. Moore was the proprietor of The Cafe Francis, Bohemian Rendezvous in New York City. Sloan notes that he figured quite prominently in the artistic life of the city, and that he held many parties for artists at his home, 'The Secret Lair Beyond the Moat', at 450 West 23rd Street. Sloan drew him from life, but notes that Moore dozed off. As a result, he struggled to draw the likeness of Moore's face from the sleeping man before him, see: Morse 1969, p. 133.
