George W. Childs
John Sloan
1892 · Etching · Drawings and Prints

'Colonel' J. Eby Barr ordered Sloan to create this portrait of George W. Childs. Sloan made the plate from a photograph. He notes in his diary that he made the plate and handed it over with a proof to Barr's brother, and that was the last he ever saw of it. He also notes, he was never paid for it. 'Colonel' J. Eby Barr was head of the book department at Porter & Coates in Philadelphia. Sloan worked under him as a clerk from 1887 to 1890. George William Childs (1829–1894) was a successful Philadelphia publisher, best known as the editor and proprietor pf the Philadelphia Ledger. One of two known impressions, see: Morse 1969, p. 49.
