George Washington stands in front of a tent with documents that relate to the American Revolution, including a map of "New Windsor." A Black groom holds the general's horse at the right and a military camp is shown in the distance. Text below states that the print is based on a painting in the possession of the Marquis de Lafayette. The image of Washington derives from a portrait painted by Charles Willson Peale in 1776 (now in the Brooklyn Museum). A replica that Peale painted for John Hancock was later owned by the Marquis de Lafayette who took it to France in January 1779. Le Paon based a painting upon the latter, adding details such as the tent, military camp, horse, attendant and documents, and this print by Le Mire print reproduces Le Paon's painting.
