In both its title and collage-like composition, Jane Hammond’s piece evokes the paradoxical combination of convention and inherent uniqueness that characterize the scrapbook genre. Utilizing a personal lexicon that consists of miniaturized references to her own artwork—such as the three-dimensional print Clown Suit and Tabula Rosa, the life-sized self-portrait of her nude tattoo-covered body— and to both found and imaginary items drawn from sources such as botany, biology, and documentary photography, Scrapbook reflects Hammond’s interest in the archive and the combination of diverse objects and sources of information.
