Riddles, a Rebus and Dances
Harding|Anonymous, British, 18th century
1791 · Etching, hand colored · Drawings and Prints

A British lady of the 1790s could have amused herself, and a companion, with the puzzles, riddles and word games that adorn this fan leaf. The "trompe l'oeil" design is made up of small notes and cards inscribed with puzzles and riddles and interspersed with humorous prints. All appear casually affixed to a yellow backing, whose top border is made out of a rebus of dancing men.
