By the late nineteenth century, fan leaves were printed as advertisements to be given away to potential customers. This example advises train riders of special excursion rates to the seaside on the Chemin de Fer de l'Ouest. Steinlen, an artist and illustrator who created numerous posters, adorned this ad with two elegant ladies watching a well-dressed child playing in the sand. The artist adapted his design to the curved shape by allowing the white dress of one the seated ladies to flow over into semicircle at the fan's center.
