This gilded wood and plaster cornice, one of a set of four (see 69.262.11-14), descended through the family of John Taylor Johnston, who served as the first president of The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1870 to 1889. At the center of the cornice is a leaf, C-scroll, and cabochon motif that reflects the Rococo Revival style, which experienced great popularity in America during the mid-nineteenth century.
