The horizontal orientation of this landscape is unusual for Dow, but its few elements are arranged with his characteristic Japanese sensibility. The low clump of trees at right is cropped by the paper's edge; the receding road rises in a calligraphic loop toward the horizon; and the planes of ground, sky, and foliage are expressed with blocks of color. In the printing, the artist wiped the inked blocks to create suggestive transparencies and textures that retain the expressive lines of rag and brush. When he made this print, the artist was busy teaching in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and in New York at the Pratt Institute, Art Students League, and Columbia Teachers College.
