Rackham's nocturnal scene of riot was painted for a book of German fairy tales, "Der Märchenwald" published in Zurich and Leipzig in 1919. Nude sprites clutch the foot of a phantom who waves a sword and leads a girl astride a goat, a monk who rides a pig, and other wild figures. The group is surrounded by magical flames and cavorts beneath a waxing crescent moon.
