This two-volume edition of La Fontaine's Fables is one of several illustrated editions of the poet's work that Didot published. It is fourth in Didot's five-part "Louvre editions," following the The Works of Racine (1801–5) and preceding The Works of Boileau (1816). The twelve headpiece illustrations were designed by Charles Percier, who also designed the illustrations for the second installment of the "Louvre editions," namely the The Works of Horace. Like the other "Louvre editions," it is a large folio printed on wove paper from the famous factory at Annonay.
