Discussing this volume, Howard Coppuck Levis notes: "As stated by Mr. Hardie in the Introduction, this is probably the first written record of a Master Printer of Copper Plates. The volume was prepared as a memorial, the author receiving the aid and cooperation of many friends and relatives of Mr. Goulding. Miss E. Piper as a personal tribute defrayed the expense of the illustrations, and Messrs. Agnew presented the etched portrait by Mr. Macbeth." With regard to Goulding's printing plates, the author mentions that all were either destroyed by the artist or by his executors, apart from "At Bruges." The latter was cut down to form a second state and printed to illustrate the present volume then destroyed.
