Like all Picasso's graphic work from 1914 and 1915, this etching was not printed at the time it was made. His Cubist prints were experimental and largely a private affair, with a small number of proofs pulled by the artist from his personal press. In 1947 Picasso agreed to contribute Man with a Hat to an illustrated limited edition of Du cubisme. This seminial book on the movement, written in 1912 by the artists and theorists Albert Gleizes and Jean Metzinger, contained additional prints by Marcel Duchamp, Marie Laurencin, Francis Picabia, and Jacques Villon, to name a few.
