Boughs from an Apple Tree with Spiders' Webs
Jules-August Habert-Dys
n.d. · Watercolor · Drawings and Prints

Habert-Dys’s designs reflect both the nineteenth-century fascination with Japanese art and the prevailing aesthetic of Art Nouveau. This watercolor was probably a design for a book illustration, perhaps a title page. The composition balances the plump fruit with the delicate network of spider webs, as five spiders industriously fill the spaces between the branches with geometric patterns.
