Keene was a leading British illustrator who worked for Punch between 1864 and 1890. In this preliminary sketch for a humorous wood-engraving published October 23, 1876, two men return from snipe-hunting before a setting sun. In the related print, the figures trudge through rain, accompanied by only dog and within a vertical format. The caption in Punch identifies them as "Old John," who has guided "Mr. Charles" through the fens, but now is ready to call it a day. Keene's imagery generally focused on humorous situations in humble surounding, unlike his contemporary George Du Maurier who satirized London society.
