Reaching back to grab ahold of her ankle, the model for this drawing assumed a particularly unstable pose, one she could not have held for very long. Rodin attempted to capture the fleeting movement with summary graphite strokes and rough shading. Unconcerned by the awkwardness of the angle, he produced a radical representation of the body with extreme foreshortening and an unflattering perspective.
