Langlois, a student and collaborator of Jacques Louis David, traveled to Italy after winning the Prix de Rome in 1809. While there, he executed a major painting of Cassandra in the temple of Athena during the fall of Troy. The canvas earned a second-class medal when he finally exhibited it at the Paris Salon in 1817, and Louis XVIII purchased the work for the state. Langlois likely produced this highly finished watercolor based on the painting as a commission from a private collector.
