Henri-Edmond Cross (Henri-Edmond Delacroix)

A member of the neo-Impressionist circle around Seurat and Signac, Cross adopted their style of individual strokes of pigment, or "tâches." Here, he conveyed a sense of sparkling sunlight by letting areas of the paper shine through between touches of watercolor. This work, which was donated to the Museum by the artist and photographer Alfred Stieglitz, was exhibited at his New York gallery "291."
