This unique diptych is an outtake from Groover’s 1973 artist’s book titled The Attributes of Positions: Semantics of the Highway. Trained as a painter, Groover took lessons from then recent Minimal and Conceptual art to bear on her first photographs. As opposed to the often deliberately clumsy and "deskilled" compositions by artists such as Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari, this work delivers a formal and geometric exactitude familiar from Minimalism that is all the more impressive considering the contingencies of Groover’s precarious roadside setup.
