Marcel Bovis

A designer and self-taught photographer, Bovis was associated with New Vision photography in France in the late 1920s and 1930s. Born in Nice, he studied at the École Nationale des Arts Decoratifs and taught himself photography during his national military service. By 1933 he was earning his living as a photographer, contributing to the stylish Paris-Magazine, among other publications. His views of Paris streets at night, with their wet cobblestones and glowing electric signs, have a gritty lyricism that brings to mind the work of such contemporaries as Brassaï, Cartier-Bresson, and Kertèsz.
