Gorgets are a symbolic vestige of armor worn by officers in the eighteenth century as a sign of rank. This gorget has the emblems of the King's American Regiment, which was raised in New York in 1776 by the Loyalist Edmund Fanning (1737–1818), who served as its colonel.
