Painting & Sculpture — Daniel Chester French

Located at Fifth Avenue and Seventieth Street, the Richard Morris Hunt Memorial was unveiled in 1898 in honor of Hunt (1827–1895), the architect who designed the central facade of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Hunt Memorial is flanked by allegorical representations of the sister arts: Painting and Sculpture on the left and Architecture on the right. In her right hand Painting and Sculpture grasps a sculptor’s mallet, while her left hand holds a palette and a reduced model of a fragment of Dionysos from the east pediment of the Parthenon.
