The vivid depiction of fish swimming among crashing waves recalls an iconic print “The Great Wave of Kanagawa” from Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Japanese prints and objects inspired unprecedented originality and creativity among designers and craftsmen at Gorham during the 1870s and 1880s.
