Pitcher — Gorham Manufacturing Company

An outstanding example of American silver in the Japanese taste, this pitcher is distinguished by the elegant coherence of its composition and the exquisite quality of its chased and cast decoration. The vivid depiction of fish swimming among crashing waves recalls an iconic print “The Great Wave of Kanagawa” from Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Japanese prints and objects inspired unprecedented originality and creativity among designers and craftsmen at Gorham during the 1870s and 1880s.
