Almond belongs to a particularly British confraternity of artists and writers—reaching back to Wordsworth and the Romantic poets—chiefly concerned with the passage of time. At first glance this work seems to be a straightforward picture of a landscape permeated by morning fog. However, Almond made this photograph during a full moon on a particularly clear night. As a result of dramatically expanding the film’s exposure from a fraction of a second to fifteen minutes, darkness is washed in a warm white light, punctuated by a glowing river in the middle distance, which is, in fact, the trace of car headlights on the highway.
