Around 1904, Chicago’s Marshall Field and Company established a department for silver and jewelry on the tenth floor of its State Street department store. In a fully equipped workshop, metalsmiths combined traditional craft techniques with modern machine processes to meet growing public demand. This bold tureen and the accompanying ladle, each adorned with an elaborate interlaced monogram, reflect the firm’s penchant for heavily hammered surfaces.
