George Luks

Luks was a gifted and enthusiastic watercolorist, producing in all about 240 sheets. He joined the New York Watercolor Club in 1914 and held exhibitions of his watercolors at the Rehn Gallery and the Kraushaar Gallery, his dealers in New York. In this landscape, Luks responds to nature's power and beauty, showing a rushing brook carrying logs along as it flows rapidly over boulders and between rocky banks. Luks seems equally engaged with details of nature such as the branch that overhangs the brook at the right and with creating an abstract pattern from rapid, watery strokes on bright white paper.
