Tritons, seahorses, and seaweed ornament this commanding bowl, whose sophisticated design was likely the work of Charles Osborne, one of Tiffany’s leading designers at the time. The bowl was a gift to Thomas Goddard from his cousins, the children of John Carter Brown of Providence, Rhode Island. The nautical motifs in the ornament are fitting, given that the Goddards and Browns made their fortunes in East Indian shipping ventures.
