Reflection in Chrysler Hub Cap — Johan Hagemeyer

Originally trained as a horticulturalist in the Netherlands, Hagemeyer first dabbled in photography after moving to the United States in 1911. Following meetings with Alfred Stieglitz in 1916 and Edward Weston in 1918, he decided to pursue photography professionally. Heoperated two studios in California, one in Carmel and one in San Francisco, and was mostly known for his portraits. Although he traveled in the photographic circles of both the Photo-Secession and f/64, he never completely adopted the artiness of the first group or the purism of the second, and, as a result, his work remains highly varied and individualistic.
