This chair is thought to be from a set of twenty-four ordered from Philadelphia in 1796 by the Salem, Massachusetts, merchant Elias Hasket Derby (1739–1799). The elliptical shape of the back is derived from London Neoclassical designs as interpreted in George Hepplewhite’s "Cabinet- Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide" (1788).
