The Heart of the Storm
Anne W. Brigman
1912 · Gelatin silver print from glass negative · Photographs

Brigman shot most of her photographs on yearly camping trips in the Sierra Nevada mountains, inspired by the primeval landscape of twisted pines and junipers. She reworked her four-by-five-inch negatives extensively, removing unwanted details with an etching stylus and adding others, such as the halo encircling the head of one figure in The Heart of the Storm, with paint and graphite.
