Portal of the Convent of Sancti Spiritu, Salamanca
Charles Clifford
1853 · Albumen silver print from paper negative · Photographs

In his search for subjects of historic interest, Charles Clifford traveled throughout Spain. Here, constrained by the ancient streets of Salamanca and forced to create a composition devoid of depth, he nevertheless managed to choose the moment when the early morning sun picked out the detail of this elaborately carved doorway by the eminent sculptor Berruguete.
