This dramatic and disorienting photograph, made through the periscope of the USS Nautilus, shows the sinking of a Japanese destroyer Yamakaze after it was hit by two torpedoes launched from the American submarine. Two men in white can be seen scrambling over the conning tower at the lower right. This image was published as one of the year's outstanding photographs in the December 1942 issue of U.S. Camera under the title "Doom of Jap Warship."
