The Eaton family, owners of the large department store T. Eaton Company, commissioned this design for three leaded-glass windows, presumably for "Ardwold," their estate built between 1905 and 1911 in Toronto, Canada. By that time, Tiffany’s artistic renown extended beyond the United States. The three compositions in this design each depict a seated figure representing a branch of the humanities, and from left to right denote Music, Literature, and Art. The allegorical figures, reminiscent of the mythological muses, are placed in a pastoral painted background. The Canadian artist, Farquhar McGillivray Knowles (1860–1932), whose name appears on the bottom left corner, was commissioned to paint a mural series for "Ardwold" with similar landscapes and classically dressed figures, which suggests these windows were also intended for this interior.
