Untitled — Ellen Carey

Distortion, abstraction, concealment. Such qualities are unexpected in portraiture, yet Ellen Carey exploits the photographic medium to create surprising versions of herself. Working with a large-format Polaroid camera, Carey produces a dazzling image of her “unconscious self”; the result appears computer generated, but she uses only low-tech colored lights, lenses, mirrors, and patterned overlays.
