Untitled Film Still
Larry Sultan
1989 · Chromogenic print · Photographs

In the late 1980s, Sultan rephotographed and enlarged single frames from 8mm films his parents had shot of family vacations three decades earlier. Peering through his father's eyes at his own occluded youth, the artist had the uncanny sensation of encountering himself as a juvenile in a fictive world. In actuality, the artist recalled that his family lived in a small apartment in Brooklyn and projected their hopes and fantasies, conditioned by the media, into their home movies. "They dreamed the whole thing up," Sultan said.
