George Gilbert was a talented photographer and writer in New York who joined the left-leaning Photo League as a teenager, in 1941, before serving in the Air Corps during World War II. Stationed in the South Pacific, he used aerial photography to map the region for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. After the war, he worked as a freelance photographer for the New York Times, Newsweek, Variety, and other publications. This study of a blind veteran records yet another aspect of war—the lifetime of pain endured by wounded veterans who served their country, but who were too often left to fend for themselves after their return home.
