An 1897 magazine article published in House Beautiful warns that a dining room "dreary in aspect" will lead to an "ill-conditioned meal." The warmth and light of a crackling fireplace were essential to creating an intimate and cheery atmosphere for dining. With its burnished wood and rich carpet, this interior is inspired by English Renaissance sources. The armorial designs on the stained-glass windows and motto surrounding the moose head displayed above the manel heighten the baronial splendor of the room.
