The torso filling this frame is as finely modeled and still as a classical sculpture. It belongs to a young Horst P. Horst, who would soon become a celebrated fashion photographer. Newly arrived in Paris from a far-flung German province, he captivated the city’s cultural elite with his brawny good looks. Photographing him for a swimwear campaign, his mentor and life partner George Hoyningen-Huene played into rumors that Horst was not really a young artist, but a wayfaring sailor on extended shore leave.
