Before becoming a reporter and war correspondent, Lee Miller worked closely with Man Ray, both as his model and as an artist in her own right. To make this image, Miller solarized her view of a street beneath multiple overpasses, and then turned the print on its side. As a result of these manipulations, the banal urban view has become a Piranesian hall of mirrors, where solid columns are replaced by intervals, which themselves are solid.
