In his guide for newcomers to the advertising field, John Havinden could not resist a car metaphor, insisting that photographers mind their cameras’ ground glass as closely as drivers must mind the road. But in his montage designs, the studio photographer finally found a chance to look up from the camera, crafting bold and expressive compositions in the darkroom. His brother was an influential graphic designer, whose travels in Germany had exposed him to the experimental work of Bauhaus monteurs. Together, the siblings introduced avant-garde principles to a mainstream audience in their work for leading British brands.
