In this deceptively simple photograph of a new block of international style apartments, Mantz evoked the presence of adjacent "hygienic" balconies open to light and air. By waiting for their shadows to fall obliquely across the stepped arrangement of windows, he also suggested, as if by X ray, the stair linking the florrs behind the blank facade.
