Side chair — Unknown

The distinctive designs of the crest-rail shell, pierced splat, and claw-and-ball feet on this chair indicate a Newport origin. The execution, as well as the ample form and powerful stance, is in the manner of the preeminent Newport maker John Goddard (1723– 1785). The chair has an unrestored old finish, and the original upholstery foundation survives beneath the old seat cover of dark green velvet.
