Although this drawing was found with the group of Tiffany Studios drawings acquired by the Museum in 1953, it is stylistically different from its counterparts. In addition, an unknown hand crossed out "F. V. CARPENTER" and penciled in "LCT." This appears to be an inaccurate alteration, particularly because an inscription at the bottom of the page reads: "For Mr. L. C. Tiffany / Cold Spring Harbor, LI." The connection between Frederich V. Carpenter (1892-?), an artist and illustrator, and Louis Comfort Tiffany is unknown, but the drawing may relate to houses Tiffany built for his children on his Laurelton Hall estate. The chair and mantel reference eighteenth-century British designers whose publications were extremely popular in post-Revolutionary America.
