Fragmentary terracotta kylix (drinking cup)
Triptolemos Painter
ca. 480 BCE · Terracotta · Greek and Roman Art

Interior, woman with spindle near fountain house Exterior, youths and women at fountain house It is exceptionally unfortunate that this beautiful cup is so incomplete. The tondo depicts a finely dressed woman spinning thread as her hydria fills with water. On the exterior, young people converse at a fountain house, indicated by the columns and the lion's head spout at the far right. Fetching water was not a menial task. The subject, with figures shown in fancy dress, was favored for vases used in symposia (drinking parties).
