Obverse, Dionysos Reverse, Ariadne During the sixth and fifth centuries B.C., Dionysos is usually shown as a mature bearded god wearing a long chiton and cloak. Here, he has a band of cloth and a wreath of vine leaves around his head. He often carries a thyrsos, a fennel stalk topped with ivy leaves. On the skyphos, he pursues his wife, Ariadne. With a single figure on each side, the artist could be expansive with movement and details of drapery.
