A patera is a shallow bowl, which in Greek art of the late sixth through mid-fifth century B.C., typically has a handle in the form of a human figure. Males predominate, but this is one of two examples in The Metropolitan Museum of Art that show a woman, indicated by her shorts. She also wears shoes. The figure is probably an athlete.
