Wilson created this imposing cartoon, a full-scale adaptation of an original sketch, for a window in the north aisle of St. John’s Chapel at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It depicts the fourteenth-century reformer and theologian John Wycliffe, best known as the figure behind the first complete translation of the Bible into English. Although Wilson worked for Tiffany Studios until 1923, it is possible he made this cartoon for a competing firm: the realized window has an allover painted decoration and bears Wilson’s signature, both unusual features for a window by Tiffany Studios. The thick dark blue lines indicate the locations of the grooved lead bars or “cames” that would receive individual pieces of glass.
