Vases with painted decoration represent the most complex products of Athenian potters and painters. In addition, they produced pottery without any embellishment or with a glaze that turned a rich glossy black in firing. During the fifth century B.C., black-glazed wares were produced in many shapes, often with beautiful articulation.
