Throughout Greek art and the Greek world, the pomegranate has been associated with funerary beliefs and ritual. The mythological expression of its connotations is clearest in the story of Persephone, daughter of the goddess Demeter, who is fated to spend half of each year in the Underworld after eating seeds of the pomegranate.
