This is an example of the trefoil-pierced-splat chair, which was especially popular in Philadelphia. Except for the scroll-like central part of the crest rail, the design of the entire back was taken line for line from plate 10 of the first edition of Thomas Chippendale’s "Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director" (1754).
