This form of jug represents one of the earliest of numerous variants that originated among the Phoenicians during the ninth century B.C. On Cyprus, it is well attested in terracotta. Throughout the Mediterranean, however, it also circulated widely in bronze and silver. Jugs of this globular shape originated in the Phoenician world of the ninth century B.C. The form was also made in ceramic and bronze.
